A DISAPPEARING art is that of adjusting the "buckets," bolts and webs of the paddles on stern-and sidewheel steamers. This sternwheeler of the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers is used on the Mississippi River and its tributaries as a snag - and workboat. Heavy stump, trunks and branches of trees often are struck by the thrashing sternwheel in thi hazardous duty, and the river itself loosens the paddle wheels, making frequent adjustments neccessary.

BOSUN'S CHAIR duty is as much a part of sea life as standing watch. This sailor is ready to grease the Santa Sofia's blocks.
